“There are an infinite variety of identity-bases. Some get their sense of ‘self’ from gaining and wielding power, others from human approval, others from self-discipline and control. But everyone is building their identity on something.” (Timothy Keller, The Reason for God, p. 170)

As Westgate’s staff and Leadership Board have studied and worked through the concept of identity formation, one key truth has been extremely helpful in the process - all of us have both a general identity in Christ and a unique identity in Christ. There are some things that are true for every person who has faith in Jesus, and there are some things that are true specifically of you.

As we come to understand this reality, we can pursue deeper ownership of who God made us to be. We’ve found that our foundation must start with believing the general identity statements about ourselves (and all believers). Then, with that foundation in place, we can journey forward in asking God to reveal the unique identity He has giving us. Keep in mind, if you haven’t found clarity about your unique identity in Christ - that’s ok! The point of focusing on the general identity first is that it allows you to hear powerful, positive truths about who you are, even if you’re still on the journey of who God specifically calls you as an individual.

In this section we will take time to dig deeper into both the common “I am…” statements that are true of all believers, as well as continue the process of creating space for God to reveal our unique identity to us. Enjoy this time of “looking in the mirror!”

“General Identity”

  • Take some time to read through this list of “I am…” statements along with their accompanying Bible verses.

  • Think or journal about these questions:

    • Which of these statements feels most true of how you see yourself in Christ?

    • Which os these statements were most surprising?

    • Are there any statements that you struggle to believe are true? Why do you think that is?

    1. Choose two of the “I am…” statements - one that you agree with and one that challenges you.

    2. Write out the statements on scratch paper, post-its, or in notes on your phone and place them somewhere you will regularly see them.

    3. Find time over the next days/weeks to try and memorize these statements. Soak in what they mean and be encouraged by their truth!

“Unique Identity”

  • Think or journal about these questions:

    • What are some “false self” identities that you have allowed yourself to believe in the past?

    • What could you do to create more margin in your life for God to speak His truth to you?

    • What are some things holding you back from hearing God’s voice in this moment?

  • Set aside some quiet time with God. Share with Him the thoughts on your heart and mind, and ask Him, “Is there anything you’d like to reveal to me about my identity in Christ?”
